What This Book is About…

Making big life decisions is difficult. Any life decision should not be taken lightly, or made without guidance. Choices are endless, overwhelming, and exciting. Societal pressures or fear of lack of money can make it harder to be clear in our decisions.

With the right information and resources, you don’t have to make any of these decisions without guidance. The Recruiting for Peace Campaign of the Peace & Justice Center in Vermont supports you in making the best life decision for you!

This book is intended to give you lots of ALTERNATIVE tools to gain job skills, education, travel options, volunteer and paid/unpaid
internship opportunities, as well as ways to fund these options. This is also a resource guide to get you started living independently, with information about housing and food and other
basic needs.

This book is also a tool to provide ALTERNATIVES to joining the military and to dispel myths promised by recruiters. There are other options that are non-violent and teach skills practical in
civilian life.

Making an informed and educated decision is every person’s right. If you are considering military enlistment, we encourage you to think about why you want to join, and if there are ALTERNATIVES that could meet your needs. If you do your
research and take the time to think through this decision and decide the military is right for you, it is your right to make that decision.

This book was published by the Vermont Peace and Justice's Recruiting for Peace Campaign

The Recruiting for Peace Campaign does education and outreach with high school aged youth, across the state, by providing a more comprehensive look at military recruitment and enlistment and
encourages students to use critical thinking when forming life decisions.

Re: The Alternatives Book

This book is a great resource. Thanks everyone for putting it together.

Re: The Alternatives Book

I love the content of this book, but I can't help but feel that the design of it would be off-putting to the very youths it could be most helpful to. Kids are joining the military because they see it as a well organized and established club that will help make them respected, responsible and will look out for their well being. While this impression is far from the reality of the military, I can't help but feel that a more slick and conventional design, instead of an "arty," warm-and-fuzzy, informal look, would make the book less easy for more conservative students to dismiss as a warm and fuzzy but unrealistic and impractical, guidance counselor-y waste of time.

Re: The Alternatives Book

thanks 'teacher' for your comments. as one of the editors of this book, i appreciate the feedback. we discussed many approaches to the format and 'feel' of the book. this format was chosen, as not to mimic and counter the military approach, but to offer something that is representative of vermont's unique personality. while some students might dismiss the book, many have loved it as a resource, whether or not they are considering the military, because of it's contents. thanks again.
